Walk B
To Barrow, Stamford Mill and Stamford Heath (8 kms /5 miles)
Follow the directions for route A as far as Ferma Lane, Barrow, but this time carry straight on towards the village of Great Barrow, past Greysfield nursing home. At the crossroads by the village school turn right along the B5132 towards Stamford Bridge. A little way down the hill, as the road begins to turn to the right, you will see a kissing gate on the left signposted to Stamford Bridge. Follow this path and over the brook turn right, following the bank for just a few metres and then leave the brook behind you to follow the path diagonally across the field along a slight ridge. This leads to a footbridge over Milton Brook and then a little further on, following the hedge, you rejoin the 85132. A short walk along the road then brings you to the Stamford Bridge Inn.
Cross the A51 at the traffic lights on the Chester side of the junction. Steps descend the embankment to a stile onto the pasture land. Bear slightly left (southeast) to cross a brook, then right (southwest) to cross another bridge to reach the bank of the River Gowy. Follow the Gowy south to Stamford Mill. Turn right through the gate over the mill-race bridge and go straight through the yard to follow the Mill Lane farm track to Cotton Lane. From here there are two paths to Stamford Lane; the first is a path directly opposite, across the fields to Hollows Farm. Keep straight on with the hedge on your left and then at the end of the longest field the path turns up right to the road.
The alternative path runs parallel to the first from a point about 150 metres north towards the A51. This is a broad green lane which again reaches Stamford Lane close to Stamford Hollows Farm.
From Stamford Lane the walk can be extended in a variety of ways using paths to Christleton and Littleton. To return to Guilden Sutton however, turn right (north) towards the A51 and cross to pick up the Byatts Path from Vicars Cross Golf Club. The path is signposted from the main road passing to the side and back of the club house. The blue posts then mark the way across the course back to Guilden Sutton.
